What is Acid Indigestion


Heartburn is a cause of discomfort for many people. The name comes from the burning sensation that the excess stomach acid causes in the heart area of the chest. Since it occurs in the heart area, some people mistake it for a heart attack. There are numerous causes of heartburn, or what some refer to as acid indigestion. Some people are bothered by heartburn because of the foods they eat.

Spicy foods, excessively fatty foods, and acidic foods can all increase the likelihood of having heartburn. This is because the level of acidity in the stomach is increased by these foods. When there is an overload of acid in the stomach, it may start to back up into the esophagus. This is how the burning sensation, although caused by excess stomach secretions, ends up burning the chest and throat areas. Often the stomach does not feel normal either, with a feeling of abnormal warmth or nausea.

Bending over or lying down too soon after eating can make the symptoms worse since the stomach is in a tilted position, allowing more acid to come into the esophagus. The symptoms can last for several hours after eating. This is because it takes a while for food to digest so the acid level in the stomach can return to normal. Most people will experience the problem sometime in their life. For others it can be a frequent problem. It is a serious problem for those that have heartburn often. This is because acid in the esophagus can cause scarring.

Many people obtain relief by standing upright or by taking an antacid that clears acid out of the throat. It can be mistaken for the pain connected to heart disease or a heart attack, but there are distinctions. Exercise may worsen the pain resulting from heart disease, and rest may relieve the pain. It is less likely to be associated with physical activity. A lot of people, counting pregnant women, go through heartburn or acid indigestion.

Acid indigestion often goes along with pregnancy, when drugs are undesirable. Changing diet and habits like lying down after eating can improve the condition without drugs.
